Volumetrics...The Shape of things to come

We are excited to announce that one of our stylists, Christie, has been invited to New York City this month, to assist the Creative Director for Philip Pelusi at the International Beauty Show. As a Philip Pelusi Image Consultant, she will be prepping models before and during the show, which will focus on: current fashion trends in hair; the pro-aging phenomenon; techniques which allow clients to maintain their look in between visits; and cutting for texture.

Christie would like to invite new guests as well as current guests of David Scott Salon & Spa to have a seat in her chair and learn how to maintain their new look between visits. “I love clients that want to be involved in their hair….feeling good about their hair beyond the salon, knowing what to expect and showing them a better result every time. The products I use will bring everything together. I want to offer more than just a haircut - I want to provide the whole experience.”.

Philip Pelusi Entrepreneur Forum

On March 16th & 17th, David, Angela and Christie attended the Entrepreneur’s Forum at Philip Pelusi’s S.P.A.C.E. in Pittsburgh. The weekend was packed with a large variety of entrepreneurs speaking about their experiences and successes. These speakers included: Jack Roseman, Founder of the Roseman Institute & Director of the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship; Virginia Pribanic, CEO of MedRespond; Henry Pelusi, CEO of the Pelusi Group; Art DeConcilis, Pelusi Salon Group Salon Manager; Pam Nystrom, Pelusi Entrepreneur 2008; Jeryl Spear, Executive Editor of LaunchPad magazine; Nikki Blahusch, P2 Marketing & Education Director; Andrew mahoney , Licensed Professional Counselor & Therapist for the Gifted & Talented; and of course, Philip Pelusi himself.

The weekend proved to be extremely informative and motivating for all who attended.

Hot Stone Therapy Coming Soon

Stones have been around since the beginning of time...they are what holds the earth together. They have been used for divination, warmth, healing and protection since the being of the human race. The use of stones for healing purposes dates back thousands of years...

This summer David Scott Salon & Spa will be introducing several new services involving Hot Stones. Ancient Greek and Roman cultures have a long recorded history of many forms of massage and bodywork using stones. The Roman Empire, is noted for its creation of the Roman baths. That tradition is still with us today in the form of modern hydrotherapy practices.

Hot stones are placed in water and heated to a certain temperature, which is considered to be hydrotherapy. They help by increasing circulation and the body’s metabolism, as well as decreasing stress, tension and tissue stiffness.

Basalt is the most sought after stone for Hot Stone Massage. Because of the high iron content, these stones tend to be very dense, which allows them to remain hotter longer.
Incorporating these stones into a massage adds a medium for the application of heat to the body. As our bodies strive to maintain a normal body temperature of 98.6°F, the application of heat and/or cold causes predictable physiological changes that can have powerful, positive therapeutic effects. These effects can include an increase in extensibility, the ability to stretch collagen fibers, decreased chronic joint stiffness, pain relief, muscle spasm relief, increased blood flow and also assistance in the removal of edema & waste products from areas of injury.

For more information regarding the new Hot Stone Therapy services that will be launched over the summer months, please speak with our Spa Coordinator, Angie Sinclair.

NEWS: Acrylic Nails: Cost vs. Safety

Full Sets: from $57 ~ Fills: from $30
Nail Art also available

During the last decade the controversy over the safety of acrylic nails has been overwhelming. At David Scott Salon & Spa our nail technicians take our clients’ safety extremely seriously and only use reputable and safely manufactured products.

The chemical that is at the center of the controversy is Methyl Methacrylate or MMA. When exposed to this chemical it can be responsible for fungal infections, nail plate damage, nail loss and deformation, damage to the nervous system, respiratory ailments and damage to a developing fetus. In 1974 the FDA declared MMA, a poisonous and harmful substance when used on fingernails and responsible manufacturers quickly and voluntarily switched their salon clients over to Ethyl Methacrylate or EMA, a more expensive but safer bonding liquid.

MMA is incredibly inexpensive and much stronger than EMA., however, it is definitely not appropriate or safe for use on soft nail tissue. MMA-based products have extremely poor adhesion. For enhancements to adhere, the natural nail plate receives severe abrasions. The nail plate must be overly filed and excessively thin before the MMA artificial nail is applied. It is this dangerous strength that increases the potential for nail damage when applied to the weakened nail plate. If the nail breaks, the whole nail plate may be removed because the MMA acrylic did not break off when exposed to trauma.

MMA creates nails which are not easily removed without causing severe damage to the nail plate. It only takes 30-35 minutes to remove a set of EMA-based acrylics by soaking in acetone but up to 2 hours to remove MMA-based acrylics. In order to save time, discount salons often pry or nip the acrylic nail off, which pulls off layers of the natural nail and may injure the matrix, (which is crucial in the formation of cells for the new nail), leading to permanent deformities of the nail.

Costing only $25 per gallon, MMA can be a tempting choice for many discount salons. However, even at $250 per gallon, EMA-based acrylic is the only acrylic used at David Scott Salon & Spa. We continue to offer acrylic nail services using only the safest and most up-to-date technology. For more information, please ask to speak with either Angie or Tina.

TRENDS: HairDreams

The dream of perfect long hair often requires great effort to be fulfilled. Environmental influences, stress, chemical treatments and many other factors can cause damage to the hair and deteriorate its condition. Result: the hair has to be trimmed constantly. Growing your own hair to be long and healthy takes great care, patience and time!

Now, at David Scott Salon & Spa, you can get your dream hair much more quickly and without effort with 100% human hair extensions from Hairdreams. The extensions will blend in perfectly with your natural hair; it will be virtually impossible to tell that you even have them. In just a few hours you can change your hairstyle, length or volume to achieve almost any look. Not only can you lengthen your hair but you can also create any trendy effect and style - there is no limit to your creative possibilities.

One of the most important ‘hair problems’ for many women is thin, fine hair and lack of volume. Hair thickening with 100% human hair extensions is the ideal way to make up for a lack of volume in both length and ends. The original hair length remains unchanged; your natural hair is simply complemented with human hair strands of the same length. The strand color is attuned to the color of your own hair. The additional body looks completely natural and can hardly be distinguished from your own hair.

The Hairdreams bonding process is an extra gentle technique, which is not damaging to your own natural hair. The attachment points are almost ‘invisible’, they are comfortable and easy to maintain. You can go about your daily routines without worrying about your extensions; swimming, the sauna, or working out are not a problem. The only requirement to get the extensions is that your own hair must be at least 3”-4” long.

David, Maria and Lauren are fully trained Hairdreams technicians and will be able to answer any questions you may have. Or check out the HairDreams website here. Please contact the Front Desk to schedule a complimentary consultation today!

TRENDS: Photosynthesis

Several months ago we announced that our stylists Christie Wilt and Michael Zingale had been hand-selected to join Philip Pelusi’s Image Profile Consultant program. Since being chosen, they have been busy traveling to different salons in an educational capacity, as well as spending time in Pittsburgh attending seminars and program workshops.

Last month, Christie and Michael were given the opportunity to further their careers, widen their experience and get their work recognized by fashion and beauty editors across the country: Photosynthesis. On June 3rd, the Image Profile Consultants spent two days learning how to produce session photography from their own work. “We actually got to go through the whole process of a photo shoot”, said Christie. Models from a variety of agencies came from far and wide to audition for the shoot and Philip Pelusi, together with his creative director Jeffrey Reitz, went through about 150 models before they felt comfortable enough to put them in front of the camera.

Christie and Michael both worked on their model together, by taking her from light blonde highlights to a beautiful velvety, chocolate brown hue, with dark and lighter shades peeking through. Michael worked hard on the finishing touches of the Volumetrics haircut, which provided smooth texture with soft, 40’s-esk volume. Meanwhile Christie was busy applying the smoky eye makeup, enhancing the model’s chocolate eyes. “Doing the makeup was extremely fun for me because it is totally different under the lights and glam. This was a great opportunity for me to learn how to enhance the natural beauty of her porcelain skin and make her eyes more dramatic. I wanted to let the reader wonder what she is thinking about under those sensuous eyes of hers.”

At the end of the day, all of the photographs looked so good that it took the photographer, creative director and Philip Pelusi five hours to decide which photograph to pick! Christie commented on how great she and Michael worked together, “Two stylists with different styles and strengths, yet their teamwork brings it all together! Michael and I both love coming back to the salon with new and creative ideas and a wealth of experience that we can share with our colleagues and clients.”

NEWS: Two New Spa Services

At David Scott Salon & Spa, we are constantly seeking new techniques and services to enhance the spa experience for our clients. As a result, last month we introduced two new spa services: Siddha Body Detoxification and Herbology Body Retexturizer.

Our Siddha Body Detoxification is derived from an ancient healing system originating in India called Siddha Vaidya. This treatment is designed to aid in the removal of toxins that impair cellular and tissue function, which is important in the anti-aging process. Muslin pouches filled with healing herbs are steeped in water and dipped in warmed East Indian Sandalwood Oil, then gently swept across the body. This very soothing massage puts your body and mind in a relaxed state. Perfect if you are stressed, devitalized or if you are experiencing muscle or joint pain. The Trissage Body Smoothing Treatment exfoliates, hydrates, and lubricates skin, leaving it exceptionally soft and smooth.

Our Triple Body Trimmer will make your skin glow! This service incorporates the use of Dry Brushing, to smooth, exfoliate and hydrate your skin. The outermost layer of skin cells serves to protect the underlying skin layers. These are not living cells, and are continuously shad and replaced via the multiplication and upward movement of living skin cells. Inactive, aging skin does not shed dead cells as easily as youthful skin does. Therefore it is suspectible to cellular build-up, which accounts, in part, for the dry, thick, leathery-look of older skin. The most obvious mechanical effect of dry brushing is the detachment of dead skin cells.

  • Dry Brushing accelerates filtration into the lymph vessels, emptying of the smaller vessels into the larger lymph vessels, and also assists in the flow of lymph through the lymph nodes.
  • Dry Brushing excites and tones the muscles and nerves of the skin, thus enhancing circulation.
  • Dry Brushing stimulates both the sweat and oil glands, thus stimulating the Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF) of the skin.
  • Dry Brushing can help alleviate local vein and lymph congestion, thus improving the appearance of cellulite.

For more information on these new services, please speak with our esthetician, Pisamai.

NEWS: David Scott Salon & Spa named one of the nations's fastest growing salons by SALON TODAY magazine.

David Scott Salon & Spa owned by David Petrella & Scott Stettin, recently was named one of the 200 fastest-growing salons by Salon Today magazine, a top business publication for the professional beauty industry.

The magazine’s ninth annual Salon Today 200 profiled the selected salons in its January 2006 issue. The 200 salons were selected from applications submitted by Salon Today readers, who represent the 25,000 top-producing salons in the country. The magazine honored the applicants who posted the highest increases in gross sales between 2003 and 2004, and who were on track to increase sales significantly in 2005.

“Salon Today 200 owners are the salon industry’s cream of the crop,” said Laurel Smoke, editor of Salon Today. “These owners pursue education, devise creative marketing plans and offer promotions in order to keep their businesses competitive and appealing to savvy clients.”

For a salon to be named to the Salon Today 200, it had to meet the following criteria:
1) The salon is a provider of professional salon services including one, or more, of the following: hair care, nail care, skin care, body care or spa treatments; 2) It generated gross annual sales revenues of at least $100,000; 3) The salon’s revenues were greater in 2004 than 2003, and projected to be even higher in 2005; 4) The owner charted his or her business financial growth for the past three years and shared information about the service and product categories that fueled the salon’s growth; and 5) The applicant submitted financial documentation, such as a tax return or certified letter from an accountant, to verify revenues.

Growth-oriented salons of every type and size participated and were showcased in the issue. To help the magazine’s readers benchmark their own businesses against the honorees, the Salon Today 200 coverage was broken down into four revenue categories: 34 were profiled in the $100,000 to $500,000 category; 61 were profiled in the $500,000 to $1 million category; 71 were profiled in the $1 million to $2 million category; and 34 in the $2 million-plus category. Each salon competed for a spot in the 200 against other businesses in the same revenue category.

Salon Today and its sister publications, Modern Salon and Renew, are published in Lincolnshire, IL, by Vance Publishing Corporation.
