David Scott Salon & Spa: Tips from the Pros

DON’T LET YOUR HANDS BETRAY YOUR AGE

Many of us now take good care of our faces with a variety of creams, masques and serums, which we hope will enable us to slow down the aging process. However, we may still be revealing our age because we forget to take care of the most visible part of our body - our aging hands.

The skin on the back of your hands is extremely delicate and will often show early signs of aging. The skin is very thin and there is almost no fat under it at all. Unfortunately, as we grow older, any fat that is there lessens and the skin becomes dry and loose, exposing our veins even more. Age spots and Sun spots, often known as Liver spots, will also develop as we age.

The good news is that we can prevent premature aging of our hands. The following guidelines will hopefully ensure that you give your hands the extra care and attention that they need:

  • Wear a high SPF sunscreen or sun block on the back of your hands, especially when driving in your car. The sun causes 90%-95% of the wrinkles, lines and discolorations to our hands.
  • Wear rubber gloves lined with cotton when your hands are in contact with harsh soaps, detergents or chemicals.
  • Cleaning agents can be harsh on both nails and hands.
  • Use a mild PH soap for hand washing.
  • Exfoliate using a grainy scrub on the backs of your hands twice a week to reveal glowing skin. The Qtica Smart Spa line has a large variety of deliciously scented scrubs with matching moisturizers.
  • Use a moisturizer packed with emollients and oils throughout the day to improve the texture and overall appearance of your hands.
  • Wear gloves to protect your hands from cold weather.

Visit your nail technician on a regular basis - not just for special occasions. Book your manicure and heat therapy appointments all year round to ensure healthier and younger-looking hands!

Summer's Suggestions for Summer!
At last, it’s time to slide the winter parka to the furthest end of the closet, stash away those winter Ughs, and pull out the sandals and sundresses! Temperatures have not quite reached the 80’s yet, but the promise of summer sunshine is as certain as taxes. With that in mind, one of our highly regarded stylists, Summer, has some “Suggestions for Summer”. Summer’s primary focus for this summer is “au naturelle”...

“With the heat of the sun, less artificial heat from blow dryers and flat irons should be your goal. If you are blessed with hair that is sleek and straight right out of the water, let the warm summer air dry it for you. However, if you have waves or curls that are not quite as manageable, try Philip Pelusi Lite. You can air-dry, diffuse, scrunch, or even twist a style that will look great for the day and last into the night.

What about the effects of chlorine? We all need a dip on the pool to cool off, so why not protect your hair by applying a spray-on conditioner like AG Conditioning Mist before going in the water? Unprotected hair sucks up the detrimental chemicals like cool lemonade through a straw. Take a bottle of conditioner with you to the pool to spray on some healthy defense!

Finally, if you have longer hair and find it easier to pull it back in a ponytail in the summer, why not add a fringe to add pizzazz? With forward bangs, side bangs, or a short angle, the fringe can be soft, choppy, or bold to bring out your personality and features.”

Give yourself and your hair a welcome break this summer, have fun and keep it simple!

DECEMBER 2005

Now that the cold weather has arrived, it’s time to winterize your hair!

Indoor heating will dry out your hair. So to reduce static and to protect and nourish your hair on a regular basis, use leave-in conditioners, heavier conditioners and conditioning treatments.

Ask your stylist which conditioning method will suit your needs and leave you with healthier looking hair this Winter!

NOVEMBER 2005

When working with a styling product like wax or pomade start with the back and ends to avoid over-applying in the front. Use a clarifying shampoo, like Graham Webb’s Visibility, once a week to prevent buildup

OCTIOBER 2005

It’s time to dust off your curling irons and hot rollers because curls are back this Fall! The look is loose, tousled curls and waves. Your stylist can show you new ways to use your curling iron or even your flat iron to make waves. Consult with your stylist about updating your haircut or adding more layers to help pick up your natural wave.

Also, using pastes or pomades to scrunch through your curls is a great way to define and hold curl without making your hair feel stiff or crunchy.

Keune’s Shaping Fibres is a great tool for that and even adds shine!

SEPTEMBER 2005

Complement your Fall Manicure & Pedicure by choosing a more seasonal color from the OPI Chicago Collection or Zoya’s Autumn colors.
